Whether it’s the base of your favourite salad dressing or you can’t make a sandwich without a spoonful of the stuff; mustard is a popular condiment. But is it vegan?
Mustard
Mustard is a distinct condiment easily identifiable for its various shades of yellow. It’s a condiment that’s made with a base of mustard seeds and treated, or processed, in different ways to produce varying products. Think wholegrain to Dijon, yellow mustard to Colemans.
Is Mustard Vegan?
Generally, the answer here is yes, mustard is vegan. The ingredients list in most types of mustard is limited to mustard seeds, vinegar, salt, sometimes sugar and other spices.
A few exceptions are honey mustard, for obvious reasons and sometimes Dijon mustard. There aren’t any incriminating ingredients in Dijon mustard, but it’s often filtered with casein, which is a milk protein, albumin, which is from egg whites, or isinglass, which is taken from fish bladders.
