History[]

Barius was born into Katolis at an unknown point and became the baker of the castle. He greeted King Harrow when the latter was holding an audience with the people of Katolis in the throne room, shortly before the arrival of Queens Annika and Neha of Duren.^[1]

Barius has several pet stray cats who where all named after the things in his kitchen. The oldest of the strays was a female named Biscuit, who was a favorite of Claudia and died of old age before she could care for her kittens.^[2]

First Saga[]

Barius was baking in the kitchen when Ezran and Bait snuck in to steal some of the baker's jelly tarts. Despite Barius's efforts, he was unable to prevent the duo from raiding the kitchen.^[3]

Barius's attitude towards Ezran and Bait mellowed after the prince returned to Katolis to claim his rightful place as king, for he informed them that they could request as many jelly tarts as they wished for.^[4] On the day Ezran chose to abdicate his throne to prevent an all-out war from happening between Katolis, Neolandia, Del Bar, and Evenere, Barius promised his king to take care of Bait regardless of the outcome.^[5] After Viren instigated a coup and became the new King of Katolis, Barius worked together alongside Soren, Corvus, Opeli, Lujanne, and Phoe-Phoe in sending Ezran and Bait to Xadia.^[6] Later on, Barius fought alongside Ezran's loyalists during the battle at the Storm Spire and survived before he witnessed Azymondias reuniting with Zubeia.^[7]

Second Saga[]

Two years after the battle at the Storm Spire, Barius officially joined the High Council as the "Minister of Crusts and Jellies". After Ezran announced that Zubeia and Azymondias are coming to Katolis as special guests, Barius gained the idea of making a dragon-sized jelly tart. Barius later helped in celebrating Callum's birthday party.^[8] Barius unveiled his giant jelly tart during the festivities and succeeded in pleasing Zubeia despite Callum accidentally causing it to explode with his fireworks.^[9] Barius then gave Team Zym his new "brown sludge tarts" as sustenance before they set out on their new quest of preventing Aaravos's return.^[10]

When Callum, Rayla, Bait, and Stella were departing from Katolis to Lux Aurea, Barius sent them off with "hot brown morning potion" and a new type of morning baked treats that he created called "doughie-o's".^[11]

Book One - Moon[]

Echoes of Thunder[]

Barius is baking a fresh batch of jelly tarts when Ezran sneaks into his kitchen to steal some. Before the prince can do so, Barius catches him and scolds him for the attempted theft, reminding him that the tarts are for paying customers. When he looks over at Bait and realizes Ezran has taken some tarts while he was distracted, he gets furious once more. This is when Bait snatches another tart with his tongue, causing Barius to chase after him and out of his kitchen.

In a flashback narrated by Viren, Barius briefly appears greeting King Harrow in the throne room shortly before the arrival of Queens Annika and Neha of Duren.

Book Three - Sun[]

The Crown[]

Barius approaches Ezran in the morning after the latter's return to Katolis to offer him some freshly baked jelly tarts, telling him that he may request as many as he cares for.

The Midnight Desert[]

Barius is removing some fresh jelly tarts from the oven, as he hears a voice calling out for him. When he realizes King Ezran is sitting behind the grate that he had fixed, he offers to break it again, which he does by pulling it. He offers the young boy some jelly tarts, which are promptly devoured by Bait. When Ezran asks him for a favor, he listens intently, promising to take care of Bait if anything were to happen to Ezran. When asked if he understands what Bait needs, he responds with suggesting infinite jelly tarts, love, and understanding. He takes Bait from Ezran and once they are alone, Barius confesses that he has always seen the Glow Toad as a kindred spirit.

Heroes and Masterminds[]

Along with Soren, Corvus, and Opeli, Barius is one of the few Katolians who are still loyal to Ezran following Viren's coronation. Just as Lujanne and Phoe-Phoe arrive to lend their aid, Barius helps in packing food so that Ezran can have sustenance on his journey to Xadia and gives his king, as well as Bait, a big yet suffocating farewell hug.

The Final Battle[]

Barius arrives at the Storm Spire together with Queen Aanya's forces, carrying a rolling pin that he uses as a weapon during the battle. He attacks the enemies using his rolling pin, as well as jelly tarts, which he throws on their faces to blind them. After the battle, Barius joins the others in witnessing Zubeia awakening from her slumber, eating a jelly tart with an awed reaction while Azymondias reunites with his mother.

Book Four - Earth[]

Rebirthday[]

Two years after the battle at the Storm Spire, Barius has been made an official member the High Council and is given his badge of office that is shaped as a golden hand holding a whisk. When Ezran asks if Barius has given any thought to the official titles he suggested, the baker appreciates the authoritative ring of "Baker-in-Chief" and he is humbled to accept the role of "Minister of Crusts and Jellies". Ezran then announces to the High Council that Zubeia and Azymondias are coming to Katolis as special guests, prompting Barius to start making plans for a jelly tart the size a dragon would eat.

Later in the evening, Barius joins everyone in the castle in throwing a surprise birthday party for Callum. At the party, Barius and several others witness two children performing the new dance craze that Soren mentioned earlier. He also made a pineapple right-side-up cake as a special birthday treat.

Breathtaking[]

As the people of Katolis prepare for the festivities of welcoming the dragons, Ezran asks Barius on Callum's whereabouts since the High Mage is supposed to welcome Zubeia with a "prismatic shablow", and Barius in turn asks Ezran about what a "shablow" is. Ezran simply tells Barius that he will know it when he sees it before talking to Opeli.

After the arrival of the dragons, Barius listens to Soren's effort of stalling time for Callum to appear with standup comedy before he unveils the dragon-sized jelly tart he has been preparing. However, Callum accidentally uses his fireworks to make the jelly tart explode, which prompts a saddened Barius to realize what a "shablow" truly is. Despite the destruction, Zubeia happily declares the jelly tart as the most delicious in all of Xadia, much to Barius's relief as the people gather to congratulate him.

By sunset, Barius attends the gift ceremony in the Valley of Graves where Ezran shall unveil a painting as a gift of hope and friendship. But when the painting is unveiled, everyone is shocked to see that it has been vandalized with Zubeia's face being torn off. Ezran decides to use the moment to make a speech about peace, violence, loss, and forgiveness to inspire everyone to build a better future. Corvus then takes the opportunity to play a piece of music he has written called "A Song of Love and Loss". After the song ended by nightfall, the ceremony is suddenly interrupted by an urgent message from Ibis that alerts everyone about the potential return of Aaravos.

Through the Looking Glass[]

After Opeli convinced Team Zym to join the dragons, Barius decides to give Ezran something he has been working on: a new kind of jelly tart that uses mushy brown stuff instead of jelly, which he calls "brown sludge tarts". He also promises Ezran that they are nothing like the grumpernickel that is only favored by Bait.

Just as Callum, Rayla, Bait, and Stella are about to depart from Katolis to Xadia, Barius and Opeli send them off with "hot brown morning potion" and a new type of morning baked treats called "doughie-o's". Barius then asks Callum if he is truly journeying all the way to Xadia to find a book, the latter corrects him by going into the Great Bookery of Lux Aurea.

Barius briefly appears in a flashback where Azymondias reunites with Zubeia.
