Debate over whether egg in a cup recipe is actually Scottish opens up online (2024)

It's one of those staples of the Scottish breakfast table that you never really know is Scottish or not.

With boiled egg, butter and salt (and pepper if you want) added to a cup or mug and mashed together and usually served with toast, it has different names depending on where you are from.

Egg in a cup, egg in a mug, chucky egg, dippy egg... whatever you call it, it's opened a bit of a debate online with people trying to work out whether other countries enjoy it too.

A post on the Love Scotland Facebook page, which followed on from the original posted by the page 'Exploring Scotland's History with my Dog', asked whether it was a traditionally Scottish dish.

The post by FB user Nicole Bell read: "I saw in another group that egg in a cup is Scottish?

"Do our friends in other places have this also?

"I have it regularly. (I put salad cream in mine but this is not normal, it's normally butter)."

Many American posters were left a little bemused but people from the north of England added that they had it as kids.

One posted: "I am from Lancashire and always remember egg in a cup. I always liked it because I don’t like to eat egg white on its own."

One Irish user added: "We have this in Ireland too, sometimes called an oogie egg."

Another user explained that one Irish name for it is a 'Guggy Egg' in a Cup, with 'gug' being a childish name for an egg.

One follower from the US wrote: "I was raised in Alabama, the Deep South of America, and we always had this, especially when we were sick. My family origin is Scottish on my dad’s side and English/Irish on my mom’s side. All my friends thought it was weird because they’d never seen it before. But once they tried it they loved it!"

A discussion around how it is made also added some revelations, much like the original poster, many used salad cream instead of butter.

Others recommended adding in bits of toast or bread, while one person went even further with a recommendation for "crushed up salt and vinegar squares".

What do you think? How do you eat yours?
