Carriers face weak demand

FedEx and UPS grappled with soft demand throughout the year, extending a slump that emerged in 2022 as the pandemic-fueled e-commerce boom cooled off and shippers navigated a cloudy economic climate. But one company has fared better than the other of late.

FedEx is shuttering four facilities in southwestern Florida in 2024, according to Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act notices filed on April 17. The four closures will result in the layoff of 220 couriers and eight managers.

As of June 2024, FedEx Ground and Express will be united in a single air/ground unit to increase efficiency and save the company billions of dollars annually. While freight services will still operate independently, air, ground, and services divisions will move under a single umbrella. FedEx Corp.
