Fremantle's Financial Dip: The Impact of 'Fantasy League' Cancellation (2025)

Fremantle's Financial Woes: When Spin-offs and Market Shifts Collide

Fremantle's financial report reveals a significant dip in revenue, and the absence of a popular spin-off series might be a key factor. But here's where it gets intriguing: the spin-off in question, Fantasy League, was a short-lived yet notable addition to the America's Got Talent franchise.

According to the recently released RTL results, Fremantle's revenue took a 5.1% hit, amounting to €1.3B ($1.5B) in the first nine months of this year. This decline is attributed to the absence of Fantasy League, which aired for one season at the beginning of 2024, featuring past contestants from the AGT universe. The show's format echoed other spin-offs like The Champions and All Stars, but it didn't return in 2025.

And this is the part most people miss: the impact of this loss is twofold. Firstly, it affected RTL's overall revenue, which was down due to lower U.S. contributions. Secondly, it influenced Fremantle's performance, as the spin-off's absence contributed to a revenue dip. However, Fremantle's acquisition of Asacha Media Group and Beach House Pictures partially mitigated this dip. Despite this, Asacha's contributions have reportedly decreased in the past quarter, coinciding with the departure of key executives Marina Williams and Gaspard de Chavagnac.

Fremantle's recent successes include the Baywatch reboot on Fox, Netflix's true-crime series The Monster of Florence, and the Pandora's Box format, which has launched in three territories. They've also launched an America's Got Talent FAST Channel.

But the story doesn't end there. RTL's full-year 2025 profits have been slashed by a staggering 17% due to the volatile advertising market. Bertelsmann-owned RTL anticipated €780M in profits but revised this to €650M, citing a lack of momentum in German and French TV advertising markets, despite gains in market share in Germany.

The unstable ad market has forced RTL to lower its full-year revenue expectations from €6.45B to €6.05B. This, coupled with reduced content revenue from Fremantle, resulted in a slight dip in RTL's nine-month revenue to €4.1B. Net debt, however, improved significantly from €492M to €71M during this period.

Streaming revenue for RTL rose by an impressive 26.6% to €351M over nine months, thanks to subscriber growth, higher subscription fees in Germany, and increased ad revenue on RTL+ and M6+ in Germany and France. RTL also sold its Dutch division to DPG Media and is in the process of acquiring Sky Deutschland, expected to finalize next year.

In a significant leadership change, RTL's boss Thomas Rabe is stepping down, with Clément Schwebig from Warner Bros. Discovery taking the helm. Rabe acknowledges the challenging market conditions, including the shift from linear TV to streaming, but expresses confidence in RTL's position for when the markets rebound.

RTL has also initiated a share buyback program for up to 833,948 shares, further demonstrating its strategic response to the current market environment.
