How to use and apply beard oil (2024)

We understand all too well the frustration that comes with growing facial hair — whiskers pose some prickly problems. Most of these problems only impact the grower, but one issue in particular hurts those we love most...a dry, abrasive beard.

Beard hair can be as strong as copper wire. Would you like to cuddle up to a pile of cut copper wire? Have it rubbed against your face? Fortunately this pain point is easily solved. Proper beard care is an essential part of growing a happy and healthy beard, and one of the most popular beard care products used to combat abrasive beards is beard oil. The type of beard oil you use and the way it is applied dramatically influences effectiveness.

1. Clean up your act.

Beard oil is best applied after a warm shower. The heat and steam from the shower help open your pores and makes your skin and facial hair more receptive to the oil. (Learn how to properly wash your beard here.)

Pro Tip - Don’t feel like showering? Wet your face and beard in the sink with warm water.

2. Pat it dry.

We all know oil and water don't mix. After your shower, gently pat dry both your face and beard with a bath towel.

3. Pump it.

Pump the beard oil into your hand. The amount you use will depend on how long your facial hair is. For men with no growth to up to two months, start with one pump.

5. Massage the face.

Gently massage the remaining oil onto your face. Wait, what?! Yep, your face. A properly formulated beard oil with Vitamin E will also do wonders for your skin. Most people assume oil-based products will clog your pores and leave greasy residue, but premium beard oils use non-comedogenic ingredients that won’t clog your pores. If acne is a concern, check the ingredient list before applying and stay away from beard oils containing comedogenic ingredients (like coconut oil).

6. Make use of excess.

Still have some oil on your hands? Apply it to your manly chest sweater. What’s good for your beard is also good for your chest hair. No chest hair? No problem. Run your hands through your hair and let your scalp in on this goodness.

Now it is time to get your beard in line. Using either a boar’s hair brush or a comb, brush out and shape your beard.

How often should this be done?

The frequency with which you apply beard oil depends on several factors including the length of your beard and where you live. Most men should apply beard oil twice a day, once in the morning before starting your day and once at night before bed.

Pro Tip: Take a nice warm shower before bed and apply a bit more oil to your face and beard than you normally would in the morning. Let the beard oil work its magic overnight. You’ll wake up to a softer beard and glowing skin in the morning.
