A green ship refers to a ship that is powered by environmentally-friendly energy, with the aim of reducing fine dust, pollutants such as nitrogen and sulphur oxides, and greenhouse gas emissions. Additionally, it may have technology installed to improve energy efficiency.
In 2014, the international community adopted the Paris Climate Agreement to address climate change. In 2018, the International Maritime Organization (IMO), a United Nations specialized agency, established a strategic target to reduce GHG emissions from shipping, and a green ship is a means to achieve the goal.
The five types of green ships prescribed by law are as follows: ①Ships that reduce marine pollution or improve ship energy efficiency, ②Ships that use environmentally-friendly energy sources, ③Electric propulsion ships, ④Hybrid ships, and ⑤Fuel cell propulsion ships.
When classified as application technology, it can be divided into environmentally-friendly fuel use technology, operation efficiency improvement technology, and marine pollution reduction technology.
The Act on Development and Popularization of Green Ship (Promulgation No. 16167)
The meanings of the terms used in Article 2 (Definition) of the Act are as follows:
The term ‘green ship’ refers to a vessel that falls into one of the following categories:
- A. ship that is designed with technologies that reduce marine pollution or increase ship energy efficiency, and meets the standards set by the Joint Ministerial Decree(hereinafter referred to as the ‘joint decree’) of the Ministry of Trade, industry and Energy (MOTIE), and the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF).
- B.A ship that uses environmentally-friendly energies such as liquefied natural gas (LNG) as power source in accordance with joint decree.
- C.An electrical propulsion ship that uses electricity as its power source
- D.A hybrid ship that uses gasoline, diesel, liquefied petroleum gas, natural gas or combination of fuel and electricity (including energy charged from an electrical power source) in line with joint decree as its power source.
- E.A fuel cell propulsion ship that uses electricity generated from hydrogen or other sources as its power source
