Best Resale Value SUVs By Category

iSeeCars says resale value is often the most expensive factor when buying a new car since new vehicles lose value over time (a process that starts right when they leave the lot.) This drop in value is called depreciation - the rate of which is reflected in a vehicle's retained value after a certain timeframe. The faster a vehicle loses its value, the less it's worth when it comes time to sell it trade it in. Dealers use the car's residual value to determine its trade-in value.

Researchers determined the best resale value SUVs by analyzing over 3 million vehicles, and calculated how much each SUV model depreciates after 5 years. Here's a look at iSeeCars' #1 Best Resale Value SUVs in each SUV segment:

3 Resale Value Factors To Consider

1. Depreciation rates vary widely.

As iSeeCars notes, depreciation rates can vary widely between vehicles. When it comes to SUVs, full-size luxury sUVS tend to depreciate faster than their non-luxury counterparts. Rates can also vary within segments themselves. Take the midsize pickup segment. iSeeCars says the Toyota Tacoma depreciates at a much lower rate than its direct competitor, the Nissan Frontier. In the full-size truck segment, the Toyota Tundra enjoys a better resale value than both the Ford F-150 or Nissan Titan.

2. Popularity = Higher Resale Value

Another factor is popularity. "Hot", in-demand, models will retain a higher resale value. iSeeCars points to sports cars like the Chevrolet Corvette or Ford Mustang GT500, and SUVs like the Ford Bronco, Ford Maverick, Kia Telluride and Hyundai Palisade, continue to sell at or above MSRP, even when they're several model years old.

3. Brand Matters

Brand matters, too. Honda, Lexus, Subaru, Tesla, and Toyota are all brands that consistently do well on annual best resale value awards programs. Researchers point to models like the Honda Accord, Honda Civic, Lexus LS, Subaru Forester, Subaru Outback, Tesla Model X and Toyota Camry as vehicles with great resale value, reflecting strong demand on the used car market.
