A Police Minister’s driver has been charged with a drink-driving offence and is set to appear in court after allegedly driving dangerously while intoxicated.
The 55-year-old man was observed by officers in Bemboka, west of Bega, on Tuesday around 3:00 pm following reports of a Toyota Prado weaving on the road.
A roadside breath test was performed, yielding a positive result, and the driver was subsequently taken to Bega police station where his blood alcohol content registered at 0.183.
The minister, Yasmin Catley, was scheduled to inaugurate the new $23 million Bega police station with NSW Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon on Wednesday. Catley was not in the vehicle at the time of the driver’s arrest.
Catley stated in a press release on Wednesday morning that the new Bega Police Station is a state-of-the-art facility designed to give officers access to modern resources and cutting-edge technology to keep the community safe.
The driver has been charged with high-range drink-driving and faces an automatic suspension of his licence. He is due to appear in Bega Local Court on December 24.
Representatives for the minister were contacted for comment.
More details will follow as the story develops.
