What is remoulade sauce made of?

Across the board, remoulade sauce is made with a mayo base, and depending on what recipe you’re using (or what restaurant you’re at), it may also have mustard or horseradish mixed in along with various spices and seasonings. In certain parts of Louisiana, you’ll even find chopped up hard boiled eggs in remoulade!

Is remoulade spicy?

Though this sauce is made with spicy brown mustard and a little bit of hot pepper sauce, it isn’t actually spicy — in fact, those two ingredients really give it more of a punch of flavor than a kick of spice. If you are sensitive to spicy foods though, you may try adding a teaspoon of hot pepper sauce at a time (3 teaspoons total), stirring and tasting with each addition.

Is remoulade sauce healthy?

This remoulade sauce is made with a healthy set of ingredients, and while mayo sometimes gets a bad rap in the health world, it can actually be a really great source of healthy fats. With that being said, while remoulade sauce is not a “health food” by any stretch of the imagination, it is definitely a really delicious option that you should feel good about consuming!

What is the difference between tartar sauce and remoulade?

Both of these sauces traditionally use mayo as a base, but while tartar sauce is pretty mild in flavor, remoulade is a much more complex tasting sauce because of the addition of several spices, spicy brown mustard, and hot sauce. Both sauces are excellent with seafood!

The ingredients in this remoulade sauce are really simple, and there’s a good chance you have several of them on hand already. Here’s everything you’ll need:

  • Mayonnaise – to start, you’ll need 1 cup of mayonnaise. This will be the base of the remoulade sauce.
  • Spicy Brown Mustard – in addition to the mayo, you’ll also need a ¼ cup of spicy brown mustard.
  • Lemon Juice – to thin everything out (and add a touch of brightness), you’ll need 2 tablespoons of lemon juice (the juice from about 1 lemon).
  • Capers – 1 tablespoon of drained and chopped capers add a really nice brininess to the remoulade.
  • Spices and Seasonings – to further season the sauce, you’ll need a ¼ teaspoon of garlic powder, a ¼ teaspoon of onion powder, and a ¼ teaspoon of ground black pepper.
  • Hot Pepper Sauce – to add a little kick, you’ll need 1 tablespoon of your favorite hot pepper sauce (like Tabasco or Frank’s Red Hot).
