Saudi Arabia's 400 MW Solar Project: TotalEnergies & Aljomaih Leading the Green Revolution (2025)

Saudi Arabia's Solar Power Push: A 400 MW Project Awarded to TotalEnergies and Aljomaih Energy & Water

In a significant step towards a greener future, Saudi Arabia has granted a license for a massive solar power plant, sparking excitement and controversy.

The Saudi Power Procurement Company (SPPC) has awarded a consortium, led by TotalEnergies of France and Saudi developer Aljomaih Energy & Water (AEW), the rights to develop, construct, and manage a 405-megawatt (MW) solar power facility in As Sufun, Saudi Arabia. This announcement comes after a competitive tender process, marking a pivotal moment in the country's energy landscape.

But here's where it gets interesting: the electricity generated will be sold back to SPPC through a long-term 25-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA). This agreement ensures a steady revenue stream for the developers and a reliable source of renewable energy for the country. The solar plant is anticipated to be grid-connected by 2027, powering a staggering 68,400+ homes, a significant contribution to the nation's energy needs.

This As Sufun project is a critical component of the National Renewable Energy Program's (NREP) sixth round, supervised by the Ministry of Energy. It aligns with Saudi Vision 2030, which aims to reduce the country's reliance on liquid fuels for electricity generation. The ambitious goal is to increase the share of installed capacity from renewable sources and energy storage systems to a remarkable 50% by 2030, contingent on electricity demand growth.

Olivier Jouny, SVP Renewables at TotalEnergies, expressed enthusiasm: "In collaboration with Aljomaih Energy and Water Co, we are excited to play a role in Saudi Arabia's renewable energy goals. This project is our consortium's second success in the NREP. TotalEnergies is deeply committed to Saudi Arabia, implementing our multi-energy strategy, particularly through our involvement in significant refining and petrochemical assets."

Mr. Ibrahim Aljomaih, Chairman of Aljomaih Energy and Water Company, added, "Our partnership with TotalEnergies in the 400 MW As Sufun Solar PV Project demonstrates our dedication to the Saudi Green Initiative and Vision 2030. Our local expertise and international partnerships drive the Kingdom's energy transition. We thank SPPC for their trust and cooperation."

Eng. Adnan Buhuligah, Acting CEO of Aljomaih Energy and Water Company, emphasized, "The As Sufun project is a testament to our expanding renewable energy investments in Saudi Arabia. It will provide clean energy to tens of thousands of households, supporting the nation's vision for a sustainable economy."

This project is a significant milestone for TotalEnergies in Saudi Arabia, where they already operate the 119MW Wadi Al Dawasir solar power plant and are constructing the 300MW Rabigh 2 project.

TotalEnergies' Renewable Energy Focus

TotalEnergies is strategically building a diverse portfolio, combining renewable sources like solar, onshore and offshore wind, with flexible assets such as CCGT and storage. This approach ensures they can deliver clean and reliable power to their customers.
