Secrets Revealed: a KOTLC story - Unmatchable: More Than a Dare (2024)

When Sophie realized that Keefe was kissing her, she expected it to be a quick peck, since it was only a dare. But...he didn't stop. He wrapped his arms around her and just kept kissing her.

She knew she should pull away. She was betraying Fitz! But... she couldn't bring herself to separate from him. From this obnoxious boy who had been through so much, and still stayed by her side. Who had made so many sacrifices on her behalf. So, she did the only other thing she could do.

She kissed him back.

Sophie had no idea how long the kiss lasted. It seemed like an eternity, but somehow, it still felt too short.

Eventually, Keefe pulled away, and they just stood there for a moment. Sophie stared into his icy blue eyes, and he into her gold-brown ones.

After the shock wore off and Sophie could breath again, she spoke, "Ro dared you to kissme?"

He looked away and nodded, and she continued, "But... why'd you kiss me like that? It was only a dare. You could have kissed me like you did Biana when she dared you to kiss her."

"Because... you're different, Sophie," he expressed, taking her hands, "I actually wantedto kiss you. Ro just gave me the perfect opportunity. And I thought I'd make the most of it, since it'll probably be the only time, since... you know."

Sophie did know it, and that thought brought tears to her eyes. No one could want her anymore, since she was unmatchable. Not even Keefe.

"No, I don't mean that," Keefe assured her, almost as if he were reading her thoughts. She knew he wasn't, because he was an empath, not a telepath. But maybe emotions could tell him more than she thought they could. "I don't care if I have a bad match," he shrugged, then a grin spread across his face, "In fact, it would probably just upset my dad, and you knowhow much I enjoy doing that!... No, I was talking about Fitzphie."

For some reason, Sophie felt like a weight had been lifted off her shoulders. She knew she shouldn't care whether Keefe would be ok with a bad match or not. The only person she needed to worry about was Fitz. But she did care.

"I love you," Keefe blurted, looking almost as shocked as she felt. He looked away. "I'm sorry, Sophie. I know it's not fair of me to say that, but I can't hide my feelings anymore! I know you probably don't feel the same way about me as I do about you. I know you will probably end up with Fitz. And if that's what makes you happy, then... I guess I'm ok with it," he admitted, "Because the only thing I want is for you to be happy."

Sophie blinked. Had Keefe just said...

"You... really feel that way about me?" she blushed.

Keefe nodded, his cheeks even redder than her's. "The moment I laid eyes on you, I knew you were special. And I don't mean Moonlarkkind of special. You're that, too, but I mean... ever since I met you, you've been the only thing that's right in my world," he proclaimed, "I've liked you since you came to Foxfire, and since then, my feelings for you have grown to be unbearable. I spend all my time reading other people's emotions, when I couldn't even express my own.I'm sorry, Sophie. I just can't control my feelings for you!"

Sophie nodded, unsure how to feel about it. "So...," she cautioned, "All the times you've teased me about it..."

"I wasn't kidding," he finished for her, "I meant all those things. And I still mean them."

"What about some of the other things you've done? Like joining the Black Swan?" she asked, "You wouldn't have done them if you didn't like me like that, would you?"

"Emotions are powerful things," Keefe grinned, "I would know. I'm an Empath."

Sophie wasn't quite sure what to say after that, so she looked towards the horizon, where the last light of the sun was disappearing behind the trees, trying to process what Keefe had told her.

"So... I guess you know how I feel, now. I want to spend my life with you, but if Fitzphie is what makes you happy... I'll just deal with it. As long as you're happy. But if he decides he doesn't want to be 'a disgrace to the Vacker family name,'" Keefe mimicked in a perfect imitation of Fitz's voice, "Keep in mind that I'm still an option."

"Thank you," Sophie said, "I'll keep that in mind. But hopefully Fitz will decide that I matter more."

"Yeah... hopefully."

"It's getting late," Sophie announced after an awkward moment of silence, "You should probably head home."

"Yeah..." he agreed, staring at her for a long moment before he stepped away and pulled out his home crystal. "Bye, Foster."

"Bye, Keefe."

"Don't forget what I said, ok?" he added, just before stepping into the beam of light.

"I won't forget," Sophie promised as he glittered away, "I'll never forget."
