Sherlock Holmes and wine
One of the world's favorite literary characters, Sherlock Holmes, was a connoisseur of many things, including wine. There are many references to a myriad of wines throughout Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's mysteries, and both homes and Dr. Watson often indulge either in celebration after solving a mystery, during meals while figuring out clues, or by the fireside elaborating on the facts of a case. Be it a delicious claret or red Bordeaux ( "The Dying Detective" and "The Cardboard Box"); vintage port (three glasses after dinner) enjoyed in "The Sign of the Four" (as well as a Beaune red burgundy); or pricier white burgundies with which to toast success ( "The Veiled Lodger"), which he purchased from his favorite wine merchant, Mr. Vanberry, wine was indeed a constant of one of the most brilliant literary characters of all time. It also goes to show that he had excellent taste.
