This week, Starbucks made a major step towards sustainability, becoming the first national coffee retailer to accept reusable cups. As of January 3, Starbucks customers can bring a mug or cup from home into a participating cafe to be used for the beverage of their choice.

Now, before you think about bringing that gigantic tumbler you brought to 7-Eleven's Bring Your Own Cup Day, keep in mind that there are some stipulations. According to The Washington Post, cups must be clean and they can't be larger than 40 ounces.

To use your own reusable cup at Starbucks, simply tell the barista that you brought your own personal cup. Then you hand it over to the barista, who will collect the cup using a contactless vessel. A similar process awaits those who place their order through the drive-thru.

You can also let it be known that you'll be using a reusable cup through the Starbucks app. Just hit the “Customization” button and then select “Personal Cup” in the customization menu.

Not only will you be doing the environment a solid, bringing your own cup also comes with a few other incentives, including a $0.10 discount on your beverage and 25 bonus stars for Starbucks Rewards members.

Back in 2022, Starbucks announced they make it easier for customers to use reusable cups in order to reduce the waste they send to landfills.

"Offering customers more options to use a personal cup when they visit Starbucks marks tangible progress towards the future," said Michael Kobori, Starbucks chief sustainability officer, in a statement. "We know our customers are passionate about the planet, and now, they can join us in our efforts to give more than we take, no matter how they order.”
