Where Should You Place Your Mushroom Grow Kit? ›

We recommend placing your grow kit on your kitchen bench, out of direct sunlight. This will allow you to check on them daily and serve as a reminder to spray your grow kit regularly to keep humidity high.

Your Mushroom Grow Kit will do best in a warm place with indirect sunlight. Place your grow kit with the box opening facing away from a window that doesn't get too much sun.

Keep kit out of direct sunlight. A wardrobe, garage of laundry is a good spot.

All you need to do is keep your bag in a warm place inside your house. Between 20 to 24 C is an ideal temperature range. Luckily for most people, that's also around the ambient temperature inside your home.

Many gourmet mushroom grow kits need light to grow, so keep them in a bright spot away from direct sunlight. This allows you to watch your mushrooms grow and some types will double in size every 12-24 hours. It's a great transformation to witness. They'll also absorb that vitamin D, ready for your consumption.

Give your block some fresh air

Leaving the plastic on your kit helps to keep moisture in, preventing the block from drying out. Feel free to spray it periodically when it's looking parched as you would inside. After a couple of weeks, you should expect mushrooms after heavy rainfall or after a big temperature shift.

Grow Outdoors

If you have a patch of woods, or even some shady shrubs, you can grow mushrooms on logs, turning wood into food. If you already garden or shady landscaping, adding a mushroom bed not only improves soil health, but also gives you another crop to foster from spawn to plate or pantry.

Most mushroom kits will store for 3-6 months in the fridge if necessary. To store your kit, keep it in the fridge. This puts the mycelium into hibernation and will prevent it escaping the box early. Don't keep it somewhere it could exceed 30 degrees Celsius.

Mushroom grow kits can be surprisingly resilient. While we recommend fruiting your grow kit as soon as possible, if you need to, you can store your grow kit in the refrigerator for up to 6 months!

Expect to grow: 2-3 harvests of mushrooms / 150g - 300g

The first flush will always be the biggest. We've had some customers grow up to 4 flushes of mushrooms from our kits but on average you'll get 2 harvests. Once the kit has run out of nutrients and water it will be "spent" and won't produce any more mushrooms.

Should I shake my mushroom grow bag? ›

You can shake up your mushroom spawn bag when the mycelium has colonized about 40–50 percent of the spawn grain. As mentioned previously, this gives access to non-colonized patches of mycelium. You'll be surprised by how much this simple 30-second action can help your yield.

You don't need to water mushrooms like a plant.

The spray bottle is for creating humidity. Humidity is a key factor for successful mushroom growth. Spray the area around your kit with a few pumps of water whenever you have a chance, at least 2-3 times a day.

Grow bags can be used indoors like clay and ceramic pots. Be sure to put a saucer under the bag, just like if it's on a deck or patio. Grow bags can be cleaned.

Mushrooms are best grown under-cover, where temperature and moisture can be controlled. A shed, garage, garden cold frame or cellar will work well – anywhere out of the sun where it's possible to give mushrooms their optimum growing temperature of around 15°C (the temperature shouldn't go below 10°C or above 20°C).

Cleanliness is essential to prevent contamination and ensure the success of your mushroom crop. Thoroughly clean the space, removing any dust, dirt, or debris. Sterilize the room by wiping surfaces with a mild bleach or disinfectant spray.

Choose a location for your mushroom bed that gets partial shade. Around trees is ideal. They can tolerate some sun, but you'll want to keep the bed consistently damp and this can be more difficult in sunny areas. Clear the area down to bare soil and add a layer of wood chips about one inch deep.

After your mushrooms fruit for the first time, when the last of them have been picked and the mycellium is resting, water well with the manure tea. For compost, soak it TWICE - once as soon as you know the fruiting is done, and then again about three days later. For logs or sawdust, water as much as STAYS ON OR IN IT.

Growers who place their tents in open living spaces will generally position it in an area away from direct sunlight. So, fresh air exchange, humidity, temperature, and light are the four conditions of mushroom growing. By balancing all four, you can fruit beautiful flushes of mushrooms year round.
