Wondering when your “all-in-one” mushroom grow bag is ready to mixed? (2024)

This video shows the second step of growing mushrooms from an “All-In-One” growbag. You want to be sure that the grain is pretty much 100% colonized with white mycelium covering the entirety of the bottom grain layer. These grains are the vehicle for the mycelium to travel on as it’s evenly mixed throughout the top layer for even regrowth throughout the mixed up substrate. Form the mixture back into a brick form and wrap a rubber band around the top like a headband. The rubber band prevents air from running down the sides of the bag in an attempt to limit mushrooms from growing on the sides and to promote growth from the top for easy harvesting. The mycelium will then “recolonize” the entire substrate and in a few weeks your block should start producing mushrooms!

[Pros] to an “All-In-One” mushroom grow bag:

  1. Minimal contamination variables
  2. Easy humidity control
  3. Least amount of action steps and time required

[Cons]

  1. Less surface area for mushrooms to grow
  2. Mixing takes more time than pouring and mixing a “tub grow”
  3. Many suppliers find it difficult to keep the water content of the grain and substrate optimal which can lead to slower colonization and contamination side pinning
  4. Costly

FAQs

When to mix all in one mushroom bag? ›

After about 4-8 weeks, you should start to see mycelium growing on the substrate. You'll notice the white mycelium growing outward from the point of injection. When the mycelium has grown three to four inches, without opening the bag, carefully break up the colonized substrate and mix it into the uncolonized substrate.

How do you know when your mushroom bag is fully colonized? ›

You'll want to make sure that the substrate is full colonized before you start the process of fruiting the kit. When we say "fully colonized", it doesn't necessarily mean that every single inch of the grow bag is full of mycelium. It's fine to fruit the bag when it's 80-90% covered in white.

When to break up all in one bag? ›

Break up the spawn bag when the mycelium has fully colonized the substrate, typically after 2-4 weeks of inoculation.

When to fruit your all in one bag? ›

Once colonization is complete, it's time for fruiting. To encourage fruiting in your all in one grow bag, cut or puncture holes in the bag for fresh air exchange. Place it in a bright location with high humidity. The mushrooms will then begin to form and mature within a few weeks.

When to shake mushroom grow bag? ›

Once your bag is about 20% colonized, it's time to shake your bag. The purpose of shaking the bag is to speed up the mushroom growth and to evenly distribute the mycelium so that all the nutrients inside the substrate gets consumed.

Where to store all in one bag? ›

Store your all in one grow bag in a cool and dry location. All in one grow bags can keep for up to 3 months in these conditions. There will be no need to rehydrated or sterilize the products a second time. If you need to store the product longer it can be refrigerated for up to 6 months and frozen for up to 1 year.

What happens if I break and shake mycelium too early? ›

Breaking and shaking the grain jar at this point would actually slow down the colonization process as the mycelium would have to re-form its connections.

Should you break up a mushroom grow bag? ›

You can shake up your mushroom spawn bag when the mycelium has colonized about 40–50 percent of the spawn grain. As mentioned previously, this gives access to non-colonized patches of mycelium. You'll be surprised by how much this simple 30-second action can help your yield.

What does mycelium pinning look like? ›

The first stage of mushroom pinning looks like tiny little bumps starting to form on the surface of the mycelium covering your mushroom substrate.

What should the humidity be for mushroom grow bags? ›

Different species of mushrooms have different humidity requirements, but in general, the ideal humidity level for mushroom cultivation is between 85% and 95%. To maintain this level of humidity, growers may use various methods such as misting, watering, or placing a humidifier in the growing area.

How long after inoculation should I see mycelium? ›

After inoculation, the spawn needs time to grow through the substrate. This process is called incubation. Incubation starts with leap off, which is the moment when the mycelium initially leaps off the spawn onto the new substrate. This typically occurs around four days after inoculation.

What to do once you inoculate mushroom mycelium jars? ›

Put your newly inoculated jars on a shelf at room temperature and away from direct sunlight. There is no need to “incubate” grain at warm temperatures in the dark, since the mycelium will grow happily in normal room temperature conditions. You should shake the jar at least once during colonization.

Can you mix mushroom powders together? ›

You can absolutely combine medicinal mushrooms. There are no known reasons to avoid mixing any of the popular varieties of medicinal mushrooms like Reishi, Lion's Mane, Chaga, Cordyceps, Turkey Tail or Tremella.
