The first flush will always be the biggest. We've had some customers grow up to 4 flushes of mushrooms from our kits but on average you'll get 2 harvests. Once the kit has run out of nutrients and water it will be "spent" and won't produce any more mushrooms.

If the culture doesn't look uniform you may shake it for a few seconds to disperse the mycelium or spores.

All you need to do is keep your bag in a warm place inside your house. Between 20 to 24 C is an ideal temperature range. Luckily for most people, that's also around the ambient temperature inside your home.

When the mycelium has grown three to four inches outward from the point of injection, carefully massage the bag to break up the colonized substrate and mix it into the uncolonized substrate. This will dramatically speed up the colonization process.

The Right Times To Shake Things Up

You can shake up your mushroom spawn bag when the mycelium has colonized about 40–50 percent of the spawn grain. As mentioned previously, this gives access to non-colonized patches of mycelium. You'll be surprised by how much this simple 30-second action can help your yield.

Mushroom kits are not reusable, but most of them produce at least 2 harvests' worth of mushrooms. This means that you can get multiple harvests out of a single kit before needing to replace it. After a mushroom block stops producing, you can bury it to get some more flushes from the soil surface!

How long do you colonize all in one grow bags? ›

Colonization occurs after inoculation. This is when the mycelium will start to take over the grain that was inoculated with spores. This period usually lasts between 3 to 6 weeks depending on strain and environmental conditions. Ideal conditions for this phase are in a dark place and temperature between 72 F – 80 F.

You don't need to water mushrooms like a plant.

Humidity is a key factor for successful mushroom growth. Spray the area around your kit with a few pumps of water whenever you have a chance, at least 2-3 times a day. If you can see condensation underneath the plastic flaps of your X cut area this is enough water.

Most mushroom kits will store for 3-6 months in the fridge if necessary. To store your kit, keep it in the fridge. This puts the mycelium into hibernation and will prevent it escaping the box early. Don't keep it somewhere it could exceed 30 degrees Celsius.

If you want to grow more mushrooms simply give yourself more of the three “S's”: spores, substrate, and space. Having more substrate rich with inoculated mycelium will increase organic mass and potentially increase your mushroom production. Keep in mind that you'll need more surface area to accommodate it all.

Mushroom grow kits are a great solution as they're easy to use and allow even the most inexperienced growers to produce fresh gourmet mushrooms year round. But not all mushroom grow kits are equal, so it's advisable to research and find a reliable supplier who offers a grow guarantee.

Put simply, mushroom yield is the amount of fresh mushrooms you can produce with your space, substrate and other constraints. The larger your yield, the more cost effective your grow. Yield should be determined using the total weight of fresh mushrooms from all flushes until the substrate block is completely spent.

Mushroom cultivation can be profitable due to its low startup costs and the ability to produce a high yield in a small amount of space. Mushrooms also have a short time it takes to grow from spores to full size, with some types taking as little as 30 days.

A 2 foot oyster log should produce 2 lbs of mushrooms every fruiting, or 1 pound per linear foot. A log is like a battery. After you harvest your mushrooms from the log you are going to want to allow it to rest for 2 months without water.

We feel the best ratio is 1:2 spawn to sub. A 5 lb bag can be spawned into two individual 16 qt (13″x7″x8″) bins with a single 2.5 qt (2.5 lbs) bag of spawn. A 5 lb bag can be spawned into a 54 qt Sterelite tub (22.5″ x 16″ x 12.75″) with 2.5 – 5 qts (2.5 – 5 lbs) of spawn.
