Lotus and its speculoos or Biscoff cookies are a worldwide success. So much so, in fact, that it’s the fifth most popular cookie in the world!

The cookie was developed almost a century ago by Jan Boone, the grandfather of the current CEO of Lotus. Their product has been tried and tested, and the world sees – or should we say: tastes – that it is good.

So good that Lotus had a billion-euro turnover and that no less than 17,000 of the savoury biscuits get eaten every minute across the globe. We might even be eating one while writing this article…or you might do so while reading it!

Chances are high that you’d already heard of speculoos before, but did you know about Hasselt speculaas? The colour might just about be the only thing it has in common with the Biscoff kind, as it has a different taste and consistency, but that doesn’t mean it’s any less good!

See? Belgium has more to be proud of than its beer, fries and waffles. Quipping aside, do you have a favourite speculoos? We’d love to know.
