Gen V Cast Dish on Golden Boy's Evolution and Wild Scenes (2024)

The Boys expanded its universe with Gen V. The spinoff takes place at Godolkin University, where the next generation of Supes trains to be heroes. Established in 1965, the school's prestigious alumni include members of The Seven. Gen V's first season introduced a spectrum of new students, most notably Golden Boy/Luke (Patrick Schwarzenegger), Emma (Lizze Broadway), Cate (Maddie Phillips), Andre (Chance Perdomo), Marie (Jaz Sinclair), Jordan (Derek Luh/London Thor), and Rufus (Alexander Calvert).

But nearby, underground, lies the Woods -- a hidden, top-secret facility where sinister experiments are conducted on renegade Supes. As it turns out, one of the test subjects is Luke's brother, Sam (Asa Germann). Luke believed his sibling had passed away due to his girlfriend, Cate, altering his memories with her incredible telepathic abilities. That tampering ultimately resulted in Luke committing suicide by exploding high above in the air. Broadway, Germann, and Schwarzenegger recently spoke to CBR about outrageous moments, Golden Boy's future, and Season 2.

CBR: Lizze, what was your reaction when you read that giant-penis scene in the script? What was it like filming?

Lizze Broadway: It's so interesting. What is so great about The Boys is nothing is done for shock value. It really is to showcase the character development. Emma feels so small and is willing to do anything for another person to like her. We do that in a crazy kind of way. However, when I did see that penis, I was very excited to add physical comedy. It was the best day on set. Colin Penman created such an Alice in Wonderland for Emma to play in with the ear, the puppets, and the dick. God, my job is so weird with the things coming out of my mouth. I'm like, "Emma swung on a dick." It's such a weird job, but it was probably the best day on set for me. It was exciting for me to tell that story. And when am I going to swing on a dick again? Never.

For Patrick and Asa, what was the most outrageous moment for you to shoot?

Asa Germann: There were so many. One of the ones I always think of is when [Patrick] and Maddie come into my cell.

Patrick Schwarzenegger: Yeah, that was crazy.

Germann: Again, kudos to Colin Penman, who did an incredible job. There was a full silicon dummy made that I had to stick my hand through and hold up. But it was so heavy. We had to have two or three people…

Schwarzenegger: It was really heavy. I remember that.

Germann: It was really heavy. They were literally holding it because I couldn't hold it myself. Then, they would spray some kind of sugary blood in my eye. I would try not to blink. That was crazy.

Schwarzenegger: I was only in the show for a couple of episodes. But at the end of the first episode, when I die, when I kill myself, watching Jaz Sinclair have to deal with all the blood… The crane they brought with that huge machine [that] just shot out. There were these big sprayers that just shot up over 150 feet all over Jaz. It was really cool to watch it happen.

Broadway: Just a normal Monday.

Emma and Sam stand divided in the finale. What do you feel that means for them moving forward?

Germann: Getting to experience it as an actor and rewatching it as a viewer was so interesting. One of the things that I love about Emma and Sam is that we got to experience being a little bit of a bridge between these two groups of people. I remember vividly that moment we were all together for the first time in the sixth episode.

That was so special. Getting to watch that group form and the disintegration of that so quickly afterward is really interesting. That sets us up for such a cliffhanger.

Broadway: I totally agree. What's so great about Gen V and that Emma/Sam dynamic [is] that we love making you feel deeply about these characters, and we love breaking their hearts. The Boys and Gen V do a great job of that. We love breaking peoples' hearts on this show.

Season 2 is coming. Patrick, what kind of conversations have you had about returning? Will Sam continue to see dead people?

Schwarzenegger: I don't know anything. I hope I get a call one day. I don't know anything. I have been out of the loop since back in Episode 1.

Broadway: Don't worry. We have a whole petition signed.

Germann: I love it. Everyone wants more Golden Boy. It's incredible.

Broadway: He's one of my favorite characters. I am not just saying that.

In the beginning, Luke comes across as a total jerk, but there are so many layers to the character.

Schwarzenegger: I appreciate that. That's the goal. That's really the writers. They positioned him through. A lot of the marketing, as well, was he was going to be this Homelander-esque guy. And, exactly as you said, throughout the show, and even the flashbacks and the relationship with his brother, you start to feel bad for him, and you really start to feel bad for him with what Cate does to him. The relationship he creates with the other people at school and with Jaz's character and being so welcoming, you really start to like the character. There are humanizing moments for him.

The fanbase for Gen V has been extremely vocal about you portraying Green Lantern. There's even artwork of you in the costume…

Schwarzenegger: I am not on those things, the theories and stuff. I am not caught up. How would he even come into this show?

Germann: Are you Green Lantern? It would be for the Green Lantern TV series:

Schwarzenegger: I'm available.
