Gen V executive producer previews how the relationship between Marie and Cate will be impacted by the bloody season 1 finale. Towards the conclusion of the first live-action spinoff of The Boys, Cate's (Maddie Phillips) hand gets accidentally blown up by Marie (Jaz Sinclair) in the middle of a gory and extended massacre. The accident essentially nullifies Cate's mind-control powers and sets the former friends on a probable collision course for the already-confirmed Gen V season 2.
In comments to TVLine, executive producer Michele Fazekas underlined that Cate will be one of thecharacters appearing in The Boys season 4. She acknowledged that the season 1 ending weighs heavily on Marie and Cate's relationship moving forward, teasing that Cate's guest turn will be important to her overall arc. Read Fazekas' remarks below:
[It] was another example of Marie’s power evolving, and for sure it impacts their relationship! Remember, we’re going to have a whole season of The Boys between our first and second seasons, so things are going to be different in ways you won’t expect.
Could The Boys Season 4 Redeem Cate?
The Gen V Character Could Still Choose A Different Path.
From what is known so far, Cate and Sam appear alongside members of The Seven in brief footage from the season 4 trailer, but it's unclear why they are at the Vought building.
The college-set spinoff successfully manages a clever trick. It sets up the core Gen V characters — Marie, Jordan (Derek Luh, London Thor), Emma (Lizze Broadway), Andre (Chance Perdomo), Sam (Asa Germann), and Cate — as the show's heroes and takes the time to tease out the individual dynamics between each pairing before taking a turn and making Cate and Sam the antagonists. It's a story that other genre series might want at least a few seasons to explore.
The spinoff establishes a potential lasting friendship between Marie and Cate before the unexpected events of the Gen V season 1 finale. But the latest tease from the spinoff's executive producer previews that Cate's appearance in The Boys season 4 may be significant, potentially setting out the path for the character to find redemption or go even further down the road of becoming a villain. From what is known so far, Cate and Sam appear alongside members of The Seven in brief footage from the season 4 trailer, but it's unclear why they are at the Vought building.

1 Gen V Character Could Be The Most Dangerous Threat To The Boys Yet
Gen V has introduced a number of new supes to The Boys universe, but one character could prove the biggest threat to the original show’s heroes.
Either development is made a bit more complicated by the very powers that cause Cate's hand to explode. Although not explored in depth, the Prime Video spinoff repeatedly hints at Marie's game-changing abilities and reveals that those abilities may become of interest to Victoria Neuman (Claudia Doumit). With several more episodes to go, The Boys season 4 has the space to offer some clarification on what comes next for two of Gen V's leading characters.
The Boys season 4 streams new episodes on Thursdays on Prime Video, while Gen V season 2 does not currently have a release date.
