For this recipe, a minimum of 8 hours in the refrigerator is good. As far as a maximum amount of time, you could fix this casserole 24 hours ahead if you wanted. The croutons in this recipe hold up well with additional time. Some recipes that call for softer bread might get a bit soggy if left for too long before baking.

Why Does Breakfast Casserole (Strata) Have to Sit Overnight?

The main reason this recipe needs to sit overnight is because the croutons need time to soak up the liquid and become softened. If you want to make this recipe for dinner, as I recently did, you could put it together in the morning and let it refrigerate all day. It makes a great dinner option, especially if you need to use up some eggs. Our chickens have been laying quite steadily lately, so we have quite a few eggs on hand. We appreciate our chickens!

How do You Reheat Egg Casserole Without Overcooking?

My favorite way to reheat a breakfast casserole is to pop it into the microwave for about a minute. That’s what I do if I am just reheating it for myself. If I am reheating it to serve to others, I cover it with foil. I set the oven to 350 degrees and let the casserole reheat for about 30 minutes. If you want to have a crispy top, you could remove the foil. Turn the oven on to broil and let the casserole stay in the oven for a couple more minutes, uncovered.

Here’s a trick my husband had to use when he was taking a hot breakfast casserole to a function that was over an hour away. Use a paper bag! When my husband arrived at his destination, the casserole was still hot and toasty.

How do You Keep Egg Casserole from Falling?

With this recipe, there is little danger of it collapsing in the middle as some breakfast casseroles might. Why Did my Casserole Dish Explode in the Oven?

This did not really happen to me, but this has happened to some people. No one wants an exploding casserole dish, especially if you have house guests. If you are using a glass casserole dish for this casserole ( I usually do), be careful about going straight from the refrigerator to the oven with the casserole dish. Here’s a casserole dish that claims to be safe from the freezer to the oven, and it even has a cover.

What Else Can I Add to this Breakfast Casserole?

I like to put sour cream on top of this casserole. Another flavorful topping is guacamole. You can always add in extra mushrooms when you are browning the sausage.
