Know the difference between Chutney and Relish

Chutney and relish have been battling it out for a long time, a constant battle to claim the throne of the king of all condiments. Because of this, people refer to Chutney or Relish as the other. The names are interchanged, and the confusion is understandable because both are savoury and just like chutney, relish can also be sweet. To differentiate between them, chutneys have a chunky but spreadable consistency. On the other hand, relish has more of a crunch to each bite and is hardly cooked with the use of vegetables.

The typical dishes you will find chutney

Chutney is a spicy, savoury condiment that originates from India. It’s used to provide balance to a wide range of dishes and is an integral part of Indian cuisine. It is served with everything from basmati rice, to naan bread, poppadoms and more. Chutney is used to highlight a specific flavour profile in certain foods, for example… cheese.

Imagine a cracker, then placed on top of a slice of cheese and then finalised with a dollop of chutney. That’s the traditional, ideal way to enjoy a cheese cracker. You will have heard this from a cheese lover, it’s the way to enjoy a cheeseboard. Cheese, a base (the cracker) and the condiment to add the finishing touch.
