What kind of soil should I use for my grow bags? - Ask Extension (2024)

Asked May 06, 2024, 11:39 AM EDT

I'm growing a vegetable garden in grow bags this year since my landlord doesn't allow any kind of permanent garden structure. I bought a bunch of 20 gallon fabric grow bags to plant some indeterminate tomatoes, eggplant, peppers, tomatillos, leeks, beets, and some various herbs. For the soil I was thinking I could use a regular raised bed blend of one part compost to one part topsoil. Should I make a potting soil blend instead? Or some other blend that's well suited to large grow bags? My thought process is that the large container volume will hold moisture well, and the fabric bag will help with drainage, so I don't need an especially light and loose soil like I would in smaller plastic containers. What would you recommend?

Hi Lucas

Compost and topsoil would be too heavy for the bags. You can make a mix of 1 part soil, 1 part compost and 1 part vermiulite, perlite or sand. This will give you a good soil for these plants to grow.

We have some more info here and here.

Thank you

Sean
