What is a sessional date? ›

Sessional dates are key dates in the term, such as the start/end date of classes, holidays, and the final period.

George campus, the regular academic year is divided into two sessions: the fall session, which runs from early September to late December, and the winter session, which runs from early January to late April. Sometimes you may hear the winter session referred to as the “spring” session.

Exams/reviews may be scheduled up to, and including, December 20. Please note that these may be scheduled on Saturdays. University closed for Winter Holidays from December 21, 2023 to January 2, 2024 inclusive.

Sessions courses are taught during the semester in a condensed format. Sessions 2-6 generally range from five to six weeks in length. Spring or Winter Mini Sessions can be as short as two weeks. The same amount of content is covered in a shorter time frame compared to what is normally covered during a 16-week semester.

The Academic Year in Canada

At primary and secondary schools, the academic year typically has three semesters, which span from September to June. At the post-secondary level, there are typically two semesters: one running from September to December, and the other from January to May.

Full-time studies: a standard course load is 2.5 credits per semester, although students who enrol in 1.5 credits or more are considered full-time. If you wish to graduate in four years, you must pass 2.5 credits in two of the three semesters (Fall, Winter, Summer). Part-time studies: 0.5 - 1.0 credit per semester.

Duration: Programs are typically two years, or four semesters in length, consisting of no less than 1,200 hours of course instruction.

Some Faculties offer a Fall session reading week, although SGS regulations do not require this.

Does the University of Toronto care about summer school? ›

Courses completed through a school or organization accredited by the Ministry of Education are acceptable, whether taken online, at night, or during the summer (before your grade 12 year).

F = Course given in the Fall term, or the first term of the Summer session. S = Course given in the Winter term, or the second term of the Summer session. Y = Course extending over both the Fall and Winter Session, or over the entire Summer Session.

The Summer Session runs from May to August (with a total of 12 weeks possible for course content) and has two short terms, a “First” and “Second”. The first term runs from early May to mid-June, the other from early July to mid-August. Days are also allotted for exam preparation and for writing exams.

If you have already earned a minimum of 4.0 credits (including transfer credits), you must enrol or apply to your program on ACORN. Your program is an important part of satisfying the 20 credit degree requirement for graduation.

Sessional Employee means an employee who is either full-time or part-time and works in a position with a minimum term of 6 months each calendar year, with annually scheduled start and end dates.

Sessional Position means a position that is created to instruct students on a per course basis and where the duties are limited to course preparation, instruction and assessment.

Sessionals hold short-term contracts, typically running one or two academic terms; in many post-secondary institutions sessional contracts may be renewed repeatedly but by definition, they offer no legal expectation of ongoing work.
